history of 3DE at Northview high school

3DE was developed through a shared vision from leaders in education, business, and Junior Achievement. This collective of passionate and innovative individuals united around the belief that equitable access to high quality education is the lever to economic mobility. With 90 percent of students in public schools, the focus was to develop public-private partnerships to systemically re-engineer education to better reflect the real world and prepare students for life beyond the classroom walls. https://www.3deschools.org/
 
In 2015 JA of Georgia partnered with Fulton County to launch their first 3DE school at Banneker High School. The model quickly demonstrated the ability to drive student engagement and academic performance. In 2018 3DE was launched at Northview. The hope, as the program continues to grow at Northview, is to give students a better sense of their worth beyond academics : empowering the students with a vision for their future, a greater sense of confidence in their ability to lead, and a deeper understanding of their relevance in an ever-changing, AI-driven world.

In 2025, in partnership with Fulton County and 3DE, Northview began its 3DE Magnet Schools of America certification process. The magnet model is a visionary and innovative "choice" school model for public schools. Magnets specialize learning experiences around themes like:

  • Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) or Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM)
  • Fine and Performing Arts
  • World Languages
  • International Studies (IB)

The skills taught focus on teamwork, innovation, problem-solving, and competition, developing students with skills to take on future careers and community engagement. Magnets provide real-life preparation with students engaged in hands-on experiences with businesses, universities, and their communities.

3DE is a new magnet program. It's model is accessible to any student and meant to enhance the learning experience for every student engaged in the program. Central to the core principles of the program are six competencies/skills: self-direction, collaboration, cultural agility, critical thinking, creativity and innovation, and engaging communication. Through case challenges and real-world problem-solving, students practice and strengthen these essential skills, growing their leadership and post-high school relevance. 

At Northview, the 3DE program has grown over the last few years. Our students of all abilities enjoy the case challenges and the opportunity to do something above and beyond the normal academic experience. There are leadership opportunities in our Advisory Board and students love the close community we form as a school within a school. And, by completing four years of the program, our Northview students get added college and career visibility with the official magnet designation on their transcripts.
